„Reduce energy consumption can be made by several innovations:"

1. Lowering the temperatures of the -80 freezers to -70C (research shows that samples will not be affected)
2. During interval-working in the flow cabinet, return the air circulation on half speed. Speed it up 10 min before start working again.
3. Store all your disposables in one storage room, make 1 person responsible to keep an eye on stocks and save disposables.
4. Turn all the machines and lights off after finishing lab work. Small steps for making a better environment!

We have many devices that require a lot of energy and due to budgets it is not easy to renew these devices to more energy-efficient models, but in the lab we do our best in other ways to compensate this.
• Insert a PCR together at the same time so that only 1 device has to run instead of 3 or 4
• Fill the shakers as optimally as possible before an extra one is turned on
• Use a colder room where the ULT is located so that the difference in temperature is smaller
• Use full centrifuges instead of several half-full centrifuges

I reuse tubes whenever possible (same solution for example). I use a single cone to place the protein gels (washing the cone in the migration solution between each sample). I use plastic pipettes several times whenever possible. I wash and reuse the cuvettes for bacterial OD determination.
